Fake or adulterated jarrah honey is a real and growing problem. Genuine jarrah honey is rare, expensive, and in high demand — which creates strong incentives to sell blended, mislabelled, or fraudulent product. As the global market for bioactive honey has grown — Manuka, jarrah, and other premium varieties — so has the incentive to pass off inferior product at premium prices. Blending cheap honey with a small percentage of genuine jarrah and labelling the result as “jarrah honey.” Using jarrah-sounding names on products with no actual jarrah content. The Problem: Why Jarrah Honey Fraud Happens

Jarrah honey's rarity and high price make it an attractive target for adulteration.

The economics are straightforward. A kilogram of genuine TA50+ jarrah honey commands a significant premium. A kilogram of bulk blended honey — say, 10% genuine jarrah mixed with 90% cheaper honey — can be sold at the same premium with a much higher margin, if the buyer cannot tell the difference.

The challenge for buyers is that the difference is often invisible without laboratory testing. Blended honey can look, smell, and taste similar to genuine jarrah. Without chemical analysis, the only thing standing between a buyer and a fraudulent product is the producer's word.

A 2024 study by Islam, Barbour and Locher, published in PeerJ, developed validated authentication methods for Western Australian honeys — including jarrah — specifically to address this problem. The research identified chemical markers that distinguish genuine WA honey from blends or substitutes, and demonstrates that laboratory authentication is achievable and reliable.

The existence of this research tells you something important: the problem is real enough to warrant a dedicated scientific response.


8 Warning Signs to Watch For

1. No Certificate of Analysis (COA)

A legitimate, independently tested jarrah honey producer should be able to supply a Certificate of Analysis for every batch they sell. A COA is a laboratory report confirming the honey's TA rating (or equivalent measure), antimicrobial activity breakdown, and floral authentication.

If a seller cannot or will not supply a COA, the most charitable interpretation is that they simply haven't tested rigorously. The less charitable interpretation is that testing would not support the claims on the label.

2. Lush Green Forest Imagery

This is one of the most reliable visual signals of a mislabelled product.

The jarrah forest is not a lush, green, tropical or subtropical rainforest. It is dry, open, ancient woodland on reddish-gold laterite soil — a distinctly Mediterranean-climate landscape. If you see a jar labelled “jarrah honey” with imagery of dense green tropical forest, dark ferny undergrowth, or rainforest-style vegetation, that imagery does not represent the real jarrah forest.

This matters because authentic producers who source from the real jarrah forest know what it looks like. They would not accidentally use imagery of a different landscape. The use of non-authentic imagery may indicate that the producer has limited familiarity with the actual source environment.

3. No Clear WA Origin Statement

Genuine jarrah honey can only come from southwest Western Australia. If a product does not clearly state that the honey is sourced from Western Australia — or if the company is based in another state or country with no WA sourcing listed — that warrants scrutiny.

Some sellers operate as resellers of WA honey without being based in WA. This is not automatically fraudulent, but it adds a step in the supply chain where provenance can be obscured. 4. Implausibly Low Prices

Genuine TA50+ jarrah honey is expensive because it is rare, tested rigorously, and limited in supply. If a product claiming to be TA50+ jarrah honey is priced significantly below what you would expect to pay for a comparable Manuka MGO 4000+ product — be cautious. Either the TA rating is inflated, or the honey is blended.

The cost of five independent laboratory tests alone is significant. Genuine high-grade jarrah honey cannot be produced and sold cheaply without cutting corners on testing, sourcing, or both.

5. Unverified or Absent TA Claims

A TA rating printed on a jar is only meaningful if it is backed by independent laboratory testing. “TA50+” printed on a label without a corresponding COA is just a number someone typed on packaging.

Ask: “Can you show me the lab results that support this TA claim?” Legitimate producers will say yes. Others will not respond, or will cite internal testing — which is not independent.

6. No Peroxide Activity (PA) or NPA Breakdown

High-quality jarrah honey should have meaningful peroxide activity (PA) alongside non-peroxide activity (NPA). If a seller can only provide a total TA figure and cannot tell you the PA/NPA breakdown, their testing may be superficial. The dual-pathway activity is one of jarrah honey's key distinguishing features — genuine producers test for it.

7. Seller Based Outside Australia

While some legitimate international distributors exist, a seller based entirely outside Australia — particularly in jurisdictions with limited food labelling oversight — and claiming to sell Australian jarrah honey deserves scrutiny. Traceability and accountability are much harder to verify across international supply chains.

8. “Australia's Best” or Superlative Claims Without Evidence

This is common in the premium honey category globally. Vague claims like “world's most potent honey,” “Australia's number one,” or “superior to Manuka” without any substantiating research or testing are marketing noise. Genuine quality can be backed with laboratory data. If a producer leads with superlatives but cannot produce the science behind them, treat claims with caution.
